Human Nature

The environment we were built for — without pretending that “ancestral” automatically means healthy or that every Human Scale preference is a biological law.

Before we redesign society, we need a better model of the creature who has to live inside it.

What changed

The first evidence audit kept the mismatch lens and narrowed several original claims. Human Scale no longer treats “small communities,” face-to-face contact, seasonal rhythms, learning-through-doing, low stimulation, nature, ritual, and purpose as though they are one equally proven package.

Novelty is a reason to investigate, not a reason to condemn. Modern environments can be better than ancestral ones. Mismatch is useful only when it identifies a specific human constraint, a specific exposure, and a measurable outcome.

What we can say with more confidence

Movement

Physical activity matters for health. The intervention can vary; “natural movement” is not a magic category.

Sleep

Sleep is biologically necessary. Schedules, light, noise, work, school, care, and technology can affect sleep opportunity.

Social connection

Supportive relationships and belonging matter. Local physical relationships can add practical support, but digital relationships are real relationships too.

Development

Children require care and opportunities to develop movement, play, knowledge, competence, relationships, and increasing judgment.

Ecology

Humans require functioning physical and ecological conditions. Nature exposure, stewardship, biodiversity, and living-land access are related but distinct claims.

Variation

Temperament, disability, neurotype, culture, age, work, and circumstance change what supportive environments look like.

Part I — Diagnosis

The mismatch lens

A strong mismatch argument asks:

What human trait, need, or constraint is relevant?
What modern exposure changed?
What measurable outcome appears to change with it?
What mechanisms, confounders, and alternatives might explain the pattern?
Does changing the exposure change the outcome?
Who benefits from the arrangement, and who carries its cost?
The weak form says: “humans did not evolve with this, therefore it is bad.” The strong form makes a claim precise enough to lose.

Where mismatch may be worth testing

Movement

Does the environment make ordinary physical activity realistic, safe, and convenient?

Sleep & timing

Do institutional clocks and environments create sufficient sleep opportunity?

Relationships

Which forms of connection provide affection, belonging, caregiving, reciprocal help, and shared life?

Attention

How do notifications, feeds, advertising, interruption, recommendation systems, and persuasive design shape behavior?

Work & time

Does productivity preserve contribution while returning enough time for sleep, care, friendship, civic life, and recovery?

Childhood

Do homes, schools, streets, schedules, and technologies create a path toward competence and increasing independence?

Nature

Distinguish exposure, participation, stewardship, ecological quality, movement, and social context.

Rest & stimulation

Can people access sleep, rest, focused attention, and environments not continuously demanding response?

Meaning

Leave room for purpose, philosophy, religion, art, ritual, service, music, and contemplation without reducing them to one medical variable.

Personal responsibility inside environments

Personal responsibility matters. Environmental analysis asks what a person is responsible inside of.

If walking is dangerous, schedules cut sleep, software is optimized for engagement, essential destinations are needlessly distant, or caregivers have no practical support, individual discipline is only part of the causal model.

Sometimes self-discipline is the answer. Sometimes the environment is the project.

Do not confuse natural with good

Human beings are capable of cooperation, love, creativity, sacrifice, aggression, domination, tribalism, and exploitation. Biology describes constraints and capacities; it does not issue moral commands.

Science

Tests consequences.

Ethics

Asks what should be valued.

Politics

Negotiates shared rules and power.

Design

Shapes the environments in which choices become easier or harder.

Part II — Field Guide

Live more humanly without pretending to escape modernity

Support the body. Create realistic opportunities for movement, sleep, daylight, meals, care, rest, and recovery.
Protect some attention. Create periods where nothing is trying to notify, recommend, advertise, measure, or provoke.
Build support, not a social quota. Invest in relationships that provide affection, truth, help, responsibility, laughter, learning, or belonging.
Develop competence. Cook, repair, grow, make, read, write, budget, use tools, learn first aid, understand infrastructure, care, and participate.
Choose useful friction. Convenience can free time or remove skill, movement, patience, contact, and awareness. Ask what the friction was doing.
Create actual rest. Sleep, silence, prayer, meditation, conversation, music, reading, wandering, nature, play, or simply doing nothing can all be forms of recovery.
Audit before blaming yourself. Ask whether a recurring burden is personal, household-level, workplace-level, neighborhood-level, or structural.
Part III — Program

From coping to environmental design

If a burden is repeatedly produced by infrastructure, incentives, product design, institutional rules, or law, the environment itself becomes a legitimate target for change.

Movement

Make safe ordinary movement a realistic option.

Sleep

Treat sleep opportunity as a constraint where institutions control the clock.

Relationships

Use housing, public space, schedules, transport, and care systems to support repeated human connection.

Time

Judge economic progress partly by whether it leaves room for life outside employment.

Technology

Protect practical control, repair, portability, replacement, privacy, judgment, and exit.

Childhood

Build serious education with movement, play, belonging, responsibility, competence, and growing independence.

Ecology

Keep air, water, climate, soil, food systems, habitat, and future generations inside the model.

Scale

Local and large systems both have strengths and failure modes. Scale is a hypothesis to test, not a moral shortcut.

The Human Scale policy test

What human problem is this actually trying to solve?
What evidence supports the diagnosis, and what remains uncertain?
What happens to health, development, time, relationships, agency, and ecology?
Who gains power, who receives benefits, and who carries costs or risks?
Can ordinary people understand, challenge, or leave the system?
Is this scale necessary?
Can the intervention be piloted, reversed, or compared?
What evidence would make us change or repeal it?

The direction

Human Scale does not need a myth of a perfect ancestral world. It needs a rigorous model of actual humans.

The goal is not to become primitive. The goal is to become more compatible with ourselves — without pretending we already know exactly what that requires.
