The mismatch lens is useful only if it does not become a machine for turning every preference into biology.

Chapter 1 survives, but it becomes narrower and stronger.

Summary judgment

Keep mismatch as a testable possibility: a modern environment may interact badly with recurring biological, psychological, or social characteristics.

Reject mismatch as a shortcut: “modern life differs from an imagined ancestral norm, therefore modern life is unhealthy.” Novelty is a reason to investigate, not a reason to condemn.

A good mismatch argument should identify the relevant human trait, the modern exposure, a measurable outcome, plausible mechanisms, alternatives and confounders, and ideally evidence that changing the exposure changes the outcome.

Strong evidence

Movement matters for health.

Keep movement near the center. Do not infer one universal exercise style or claim “natural movement” is intrinsically superior to deliberate exercise.

Strong foundation

Sleep is a biological requirement and schedules can constrain it.

Keep sleep and circadian timing. Replace vague “seasonal rhythms” with measurable language about sleep, daylight/darkness, and schedules. Specific institutional fixes remain context-sensitive.

Strong association / consensus

Social connection and belonging matter.

Keep the social core, but do not define healthy relationship as face-to-face only. The stronger claim concerns wanted, supportive, sufficiently strong relationships and belonging.

Strong in childhood

Play matters for child development.

Keep play as a childhood concern without claiming every form of play is safe, beneficial, or superior to instruction.

What needs narrower language

Revise

“Small communities” are not a proven ideal human group size.

Small scale can improve legibility and reciprocity; it can also produce exclusion, conformity, local monopoly, or incapacity. Keep the existing rule: scale is a hypothesis to test, not a moral shortcut.

Context-dependent evidence

“Learning through doing” is too universal.

Active learning performs strongly in some contexts, including undergraduate STEM, but education also requires explanation, reading, retrieval, practice, observation, and other methods.

Moderate

Nature contact is promising, not one universal dose.

Separate green-space exposure, active stewardship, ecological health, and political access to living land. They are different claims.

Working hypothesis

“Contact with the physical world” is too broad as a psychological requirement.

Air, water, food, shelter, temperature, and ecological function are necessities. Craft, repair, gardening, and manual competence are Human Scale values and hypotheses that deserve separate testing.

Underspecified

“Low stimulation” varies by person and context.

Reframe toward access to sleep, rest, focused attention, and environments that do not continuously demand response. Neurotype and sensory preference matter.

Split the bundle

Meaning, story, ritual, spirituality, and purpose are not one empirical claim.

Study them separately. Keep a philosophical commitment that a good society leaves room for religious, artistic, contemplative, philosophical, and existential life.

Recommended language changes

Opening: Replace “nature, small communities, physical movement, direct relationships, seasonal rhythms...” with “nature, physical movement, sleep and light-dark rhythms, supportive social relationships, and dependence on living ecological systems.”
Relationships: Replace “face-to-face relationships” as a universal need with “supportive relationships, belonging, care, and reciprocal social connection.”
Learning: Replace “learning through doing” in the universal-needs list with “opportunities to learn, practice, explore, and develop competence.”
Quiet: Replace “periods of low stimulation” with “access to rest, focused attention, sleep, and environments not continuously demanding response.”
Mismatch: Add an explicit rule: novelty is a reason to investigate, not a reason to condemn.

What Chapter 1 gets right

The audit strengthens the environmental-analysis principle: personal responsibility is incomplete when infrastructure, schedules, products, incentives, or institutions reliably make a behavior harder.

The chapter is strongest when it asks:

What does this environment reliably make easier or harder for actual human beings?

It is weakest when it says: “humans evolved around X, therefore society should restore X.”

What would change our minds?

We should revise the doctrine more aggressively if stronger evidence shows that supposed mismatch effects disappear under better controls; remote relationships replicate local practical support across relevant outcomes; nature adds little beyond correlated factors; high-stimulation digital environments produce durable gains without meaningful attention, sleep, or agency costs; or favored Human Scale interventions increase burden and exclusion without producing the intended benefit.

The doctrine should also change when a modern environment is demonstrably better than its ancestral analogue.

Mismatch research should find matches too.

The core claim becomes less romantic and more testable.

Modern systems can change human environments faster than we understand their effects. Identify recurring constraints, measure the interaction, redesign harmful defaults when evidence supports it, and keep values explicit when evidence cannot choose for us.
