Independence can require support
CRPD Article 19 explicitly recognizes personal assistance and support services as compatible with independent living and inclusion in the community. Human Scale should therefore define independence as meaningful control over one's life — not the absence of assistance.
Assistive technology is paradigmatic Human Scale technology
Wheelchairs, hearing aids, prostheses, glasses, captioning, speech recognition, communication systems, memory aids, and other assistive products can make ordinary participation possible. For many people, advanced technology is not what removes them from “natural life.” It is what returns capability.

Across the doctrine
Human variation is part of human nature. Do not define normal functioning by majority performance.
Create a portfolio of access: routes, rest, shade, toilets, sensory information, accessible gardening, and alternatives — without requiring every wild place to serve every body identically.
Digital relationships and remote participation can be essential accessibility infrastructure, not second-best community.
Flexibility, remote work, assistive technology, accessible recruitment, task accommodation, transportation, and recovery time belong inside the good-work test.
Assistive technology is one of the strongest cases for powerful technology. Privacy, support, reliability, compatibility, cost, and maintainability all matter.
Reliable power can be medical infrastructure: respiratory devices, refrigeration, elevators, powered mobility, communication, cooling, heating, and charging.
Equal income can produce unequal real capability when disability adds costs or constrains work and transportation. Benefit cliffs can punish attempts to gain independence.
Meetings, voting, hearings, documents, complaints, courts, emergency notices, and appeals must be usable before participation can be called equal.
Swallowing needs, medically necessary diets, sensory differences, dexterity, packaging, kitchen design, delivery, and caregiver burden complicate “cook from scratch” advice.
Walkability is incomplete without rollability, rest, transit accessibility, parking where needed, alternative channels, and safe evacuation.
Maintain ambitious learning while providing different routes to participation, communication, assessment, and independence.
Support should increase autonomy for both the person receiving care and the caregiver. Neither family nor professional systems automatically know best.
Minimalist interfaces can hide state or cues that some users need. Prefer configurable clarity over one idea of calm.
Do not treat disability as punishment, inspiration spectacle, moral failure, or something that must be spiritually fixed.
AI can expand captioning, description, communication, memory, navigation, and executive-function support — or create inaccessible automated decisions with weak recourse.
Doctrine-wide changes
Age, disability, neurotype, chronic illness, and temporary impairment belong in the baseline model.
Support can increase independence rather than negate it.
Replace walkability-only thinking with realistic multimodal access.
Replace one minimalist ideal with user-adjustable information and prompting.
Remote access can be a first-class mode of belonging and civic life.
Lived expertise belongs in research, governance, testing, and post-launch feedback.
What would change our minds?
Revise any accessibility intervention when disabled users show that it reduces capability, creates new barriers, increases safety risk, or imposes disproportionate costs compared with better alternatives. Accessibility needs can conflict; configurable and multiple-channel systems may outperform one fictional universal interface.
